2015 Legislative Session Underway in Maryland

This week, Maryland’s General Assembly began the 2015 legislative session. With many seats changing hands during the recent election, the legislature has a new look to it, to go along with Maryland’s soon-to-be governor, Larry Hogan. The issue getting the most attention at the outset is the state budget. Facing a large shortfall, the new governor begins his term trying to cut unnecessary spending in order to balance the budget. Agudath Israel and its allies will be working to secure and increase state funding for nonpublic schools and will continue to push for other programs that will benefit day school students.

A new item that will be the focus of Agudath Israel’s legislative efforts is legislation that seeks to legalize physician-assisted suicide. This item has been presented in a growing number of states, and efforts are underway to try and defeat this troubling proposal.
