Scholarship Expansion in Georgia

An expansion to Georgia’s $58 million scholarship tax credit program, House Bill 217, advanced this week in the House Ways and Means Committee, sending it to the powerful Rules Committee. The modified bill increased the cap to $65 million, with a 10% increase each following year if the cap is met. To watch the hearing,  click here (first item on agenda).

Torah Day School of Atlanta students visited the Capitol the day before the vote and met with Governor Nathan Deal,  State Senator Elana Parent, and State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver. Many of the students in the school receive a scholarship thanks to the tax credit program.  The students had the opportunity to discuss the tax credit bill and learn how a bill becomes a law. The students also met with  Jamie Lord, the director of government affairs for the Center for Georgia Opportunity. Agudath Israel has worked closely with Ms. Lord for nearly ten years on various school choice issues in Georgia.
